The History of Jewel Runaway Bay
Thought you might be interested in some of the History surrounding Jewel Runaway Bay.
The resort was was formerly SuperClubs Breezes Runaway Bay. One of Jamaica’s most renowned all-inclusive resorts.
In 1983, John Issa, the Chairman of SuperClubs, leased the property from the Urban Development Corporation.
Then in 2003 John purchased the property.
Recently, Superclubs sold the property to Richard Byles, President and CEO of Sagicor Life Jamaica.
Sagicor budgeted $3.5M for a resort facelift and engaged Aimbridge Hospitality to manage the resort.
Aimbridge is a resort management powerhouse that owns or manages more than 60 luxury hotels and nearly 11,000 rooms.
Aimbridge Hospitality promoted Jewel Dunn’s River Assistant Manager, Scott Robbins, to General Manager of Jewel Runaway Bay where he led the multi-million dollar overhaul. Mr. Robbins watched over the transformation of pools, restaurants, conference rooms, and guest rooms.
He also ensured the careful addition of Jewel’s exclusive signature appointments some of which I found out he designed himself.
The adults only to family friendly change is impressive and the new accommodations are providing a safe and fun environment for infants, children, and teens.
The rebranding looks to be a complete success. The parents I visited with are pleased with the activities provided for the kids and the time it gives them to be a couple. Every night at supper I heard animated family conversations where everyone caught up on the day’s activities.
When I spoke to staff members that remained after the transition from Breezes they all seemed excited about the changes throughout the resort. The concierge at the pool told me that management welcomes employee suggestions and the teamwork really benefits the guests.
That is precisely what has happened as a revitalized staff welcomes guests who have embraced the changes at this popular north beach resort, just an hour from Montego Bay. When one of the children visiting the resort remarked, “This is an awesome playground”, she summed it up for the adults as well.
Jewel Runaway Bay Beach and Golf Resort is more than a clever makeover. It is a destination for duffers, divers, and divas that want to play under, over, and near the Caribbean Sea with the whole family.
